New Organic Flea Control Products
Even though we won’t be in the peak of flea season until late summer, fleas can live and reproduce inside your home and affect your pets all year long. We are pleased to introduce two new organic flea control products available now at Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic.
Comfortis: Organic Flea Control For Dogs
Comfortis is a once-a-month oral tablet for dogs. The active ingredient is Spinosad, a unique organic pesticide created through a process of bacterial fermentation. It is USDA approved for certified organic produce and livestock, and has been found to be an effective flea treatment when given orally to dogs.
Ectopamine Topical: Organic Flea Control For Cats
For cats, Ectopamine Topical is an essential oil compound that is applied to the cat’s skin once every 2-4 weeks. It is also available as a spray that can be used on dogs or cats. Both of these products offer a safe, effective alternative to topical insecticides such as Advantage and Frontline. We have never carried these insecticides at our clinic due to concerns of potential toxicity not only for pets, but also for people in contact with the treated pets. Also, Advantage and Frontline do not degrade quickly in the environment and can adversely affect fish reproduction when entering rivers and streams.
Comfortis is available only as a prescription, so your dog needs to have had an exam at our clinic within the last year. Ectopamine is available over the counter and does not require a prescription.
